Thanks to its structure, the filter media has an extremely large contact surface (inside and outside) where good bacteria can develop. Other brands are only able to remove ammonia and nitrite, but Biohome Ultimate allows both nitrifying (aerobic) and de nitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria to colonize due to its unique structure. The nitrifying bacteria, you can create full cycle filtration which also breaks down nitrate. This results in better water quality, so fewer water changes are required. Biohome Filter Media products can easily be used in combination with pH increasing or decreasing products. The added trace elements are intended to promote the growth of good bacteria and do not affect water composition. Optimum eficiency is under zero light levels however BIOHOME does operate in shaded environment. Porosity extends through the pellet, meaning air can actually be blown through the centre of new pellets by mouth. We recommend a small, slow, regular exchange of water to maintain trace elements balance in household aquaria. Medications should always be used with extreme caution as many will kill off beneficial bacteria and most are detrimental, especially antibiotic treatments. Stable high quality water prevents many diseases. Filter mat, foam, gravel clay, carbon lava, coral, or moulded plastics support only limited bacterial growth for removal of some nitrogenous compounds. Consequentially these materials are more suited to degassing and/or ion exchange than to effective biological filter operations.
